I idea generate for a living. On daily basis I meet people who are looking for new profitable business ideas. Often times my clients and students ask me for a “great idea” for them to take on, as if I was randomly to pull one out of a magic idea box. This story will show you what to focus on when “finding” your next big idea.

This morning I was putting in my contact lenses realizing that I soon need to refill my stock and it got me thinking what the market looked like when I got my very first pair. I remember that you were forced to go to the optician to get a subscription and then directed to the pharmacy who sold the lenses. You were called in for an annual checkup and if you missed it, you wouldn’t get a new subscription and ultimately nobody would sell you a new batch. God forbid if you went over 30 days with one pair (ever met a student on a student budget?).

Earlier today I found myself without my laptop for two hours due to a software update. I saw that as a sign of a long overdue house clean, so I rolled up my sleeves and went for it. You see, when I clean, I really clean. I move furnitures, I crawl under the bed, I wipe off spiders from every corner (downside of living in a very cool attic). If you remember Magda from “All about Mary” — I am her, she is me. (we even share first name). The funny thing… when I was done and looked around the place, I realized that I had taken care of all the hard to reach parts, but completely missed the middle. The open space floor area. Which got me thinking: this is exactly what we tend to do in our businesses. …

Great ideas are born out of a solid preparation phase, some incubation time — and a lot of inspiration. Just as in the song from Chicago, “I can’t do it alone”, a helping hand in a shape of a creative injection has never done any harm. So here are 10 people who will bring you the inspiration you need.

Oh, I’m sorry. I am not going to give you 10 NAMES, since what you and I are creating at the moment is immensely different and we couldn’t possibly get inspired by same individuals (ok, sure — to some extend, but you get my point). …

At the time of writing I am watching the last hours of US Elections. Pick a thriller movie of your choice and this still trumps it (sorry, too soon?) A morning just as exciting as important for the future. Most of us will be affected by the outcome, some of us more than others. My question to you: is your idea resistant to change?

Some changes have an impact on everyone. (I am working out of Sweden and thinking about publishing a book on Amazon.com — will there be trade restrictions? My digital courses are on an American platform — will I still be able to use Stripe?) Some other things are yours to control, regardless of global political swings around you. …

Imagine going to your e-mail for a random check (for the 15th time today even thought productivity experts say you should only open your e-mail once daily), only to see the message “this e-mail doesn’t exist”.

You see, a few days prior I had moved my e-mail hosting and my domain from one registrar to another, not realizing that it was on me to copy databases, set up new addresses etc. Needless to say, I hadn’t done any of these things.

My primary inbox went from 1506 e-mails to… no e-mails. All the “inbox zero” enthusiasts might be doing their happy dance at this point, but i assure you that I wasn’t. I thank my lucky start that the handfull of my really important messages were safely resting in the “Important Urgent” folder stored in my Dropbox, but all the others… lost. …

Have you ever questioned what the heck you are doing? As a business owner, has a thought of changing directions ever crossed your mind? Have you analyzed that beloved project of yours thinking: “how did this happen”? If so, maybe at some point an idea of a pivot struck you.

A pivot is usually intended to help a business recover from a tough period, or survive after experiencing new competition or other factors that make the original business model unsustainable. — Entrepreneur.com

The inspiration for this story came from conversations with highly talented business people who, for one reason or another, felt ashamed for changing directions. As if their business idea was carved in stone and they were forced to pursue it at all cost. …

I am not a gamer. Unless you count way too many hours playing 2048 as gaming, then I am. But really, I’m not. So I apologize in advance for making up my own lingo and not knowing all the hacks and rules. Gamers, stay with me, this is going to be worth it despite lack of COD skills (I am only at level 46).

Let’s start from the beginning. A few weeks ago we were having a quiet night at home and my partner was playing Call of Duty. I wanted to try, so I downloaded the app to my phone… and the rest is history. As any other well designed game, this one is meant to make you stay for hours on end. So I did, #sorrynotsorry — what happened the other day is the interesting part of this story. I was discussing Entrepreneurship with a friend who said “in business, you need to keep moving all the time” and the first thought that came into my head was: “just like in Call of Duty”. …

I am sure that you have heard about — or even experienced — an “Eureka moment”. A sudden realization of something deeply unclear. A revelation. It sounds exotic and almost divine, doesn’t it?

The notion of revelation describes the condition quite simply; by which I mean that something profoundly convulsive and disturbing suddenly becomes visible and audible with indescribable definiteness and exactness. — Friedrich Nietzsche

The reality is, unfortunately, not that alluring. Regardless of what this “enlightenment” is called by scientists, poets and philosophers, (everything from “God” to “The Higher Self”, “Inspiration” and “Muse”), it is a part of a linear idea generation process — stage 3: Illumination (after 1. Preparation and 2. Incubation and before 4. …

If you are reading this thinking: “my business is doing just fine, I don’t need more sales”, then I congratulate you. But I dare to say that most of us business owners wouldn’t mind more profit, more clients, wider reach etc. If you are one of them (us), stay with me.

We grind. We put in the work every day, come rain or shine, to make our business work. We push through whatever happens — and if it doesn’t work, then we try harder. All businesses go up and down. If, by any means, we hit a road block, we roll up our sleeves, put the blinders on and focus even more on the task at hand. Often times what we really need at this point, is a moment of reflection to understand why something doesn’t sell as well as we planned it to. …
